RJH Cars have this incredible MSA Approved Category 1 Mini Cooper. This delightful car was first built in April 1964 and was registered to it's first keeper on the 01.06.1964. The second registered owner of the car acquired it on the 14.03.1988. The original owner was a 60’s rally star who brought it to compete in the Motoring News Rally Championship and all the local rallies around mid wales and used the car up until retiring it in the early seventies. We have on file a Heritage Certificate confirming it is a Morris Mini Cooper and also a full photographic record of the work being done to car along with invoices covering the work done.
The car has been progressively developed since that initial build to be campaigned in the British Historic Championship and now has a MSA ‘Passport’ and is ready for its UK MSA Historic Rally Vehicle Identity Form.
MK1 SHELL which had a total professional oven spray inside and out. It has steel doors and bootlid, fitted with period reversing light and fibreglass Bonnet to historic regulations. New laminated windscreen, chrome fittings. Quick-release grille, New lamps all round with H4 headlights. Bullet mirrors fitted with race fixings. The front side windows have been replaced with lexan items with the rears having the appropriate film for stage rally regulations.
New FIA six point safety devices, roll cage. Plates welded into the shell BEFORE respray. The cage has been comprehensively updated to the maximum safety specification allowed for historic competition by the current owner with twin door bars (passenger and driver), dash cross-bar b-pillar bar and harness bar all done to a very high standard and fitted with safety devices FIA padding.
The high specification of the safety components includes 2 x motordrive rally seats bolted to weld in seat mounts. 2 x 6 point TRS HANS specific harnesses with lifeline fully plumbed in extinguisher to UK MSA specification plus hand held to match. Chrome Fly Off hand brake, 100mph Cooper speedo, the full tank is larger/later than a 7 gallon tank.
To reflect its ‘ready to rally’ specification it has a Peltor Intercom and a Brantz Historic specification trip meter with early warning for oil pressure issues via a hi vis oil pressure light and the car is fully wired with a bespoke loom with relays (with redundancy built in) for 4 front spotlights.
Rear Subframe, Mini Sport Adjustable Ride Height Cones, Bilstein Group ‘N’ shock absorbers, “S” Hubs new bearings & New super-mini-fin drums with competition linings. In accordance with Historic Rally regulations, it has fixed rear camber but it has been adjusted for neutral handling.
Subframe seam welded, Competition uprated cones, New HI-LO adjustable trumpets, New Bilstein Group N shock absorbers, 1.5 degree negative camber bottom arms, adjustable heavy duty tie-bars, New quick-rack steering rack with new longer rod ends, New “S” hubs and bearings and swivel-pin kits, ST competition grade rubber bushes all round, braided brake hoses, new “S” discs and calipers fitted in 2019. Two front tow-eyes & the far superior full forest specification dural sumpguard. At the end of the 2019 season, the suspension was refreshed with new ball joints & CV joints fitted.
The engine has undergone a recent very comprehensive and meticulous build and the new owner will benefit from what is effectively a new engine, in very period specification. A 1275 A Series block, which are getting rare, bored to 1330 cc with centre main strap and IWIS big-pin type simplex cam drive chain and tensioner set-up with a Kent 276 Rally Cam, with a EN40B crank and S rods. It has a MiniSport rally specification head with Twin HS 1 1/2 carbs with K&N conical filters. It has been re wired for an alternator set up with a high capacity alternator, hi torque starter motor, Aldon yellow modified distributor, facet competition electric fuel pump and regulator valve, 2 core super cool radiator & New 13 row oil cooler with braided hoses and silicon hoses throughout.
This engine is so fresh it has done a mere 100 road miles since re-build and is still being run-in.
In keeping with its historic rally specification the car has been fitted with a mk1 gearbox with a Mini Spares straight cut close ratio clubman gear kit, Mini Spares straight cut drop gears with a cross pin diff, central oil pick-up pipe. It was professionally overhauled/rebuilt with a new primary, input and idler gear and re-shimmed, the work being carried out at the same time as the engine ready for its next outing.
